The International Child Health Review Collaboration is a multi-centre project to deliver the evidence based medicine behind World Health Organisation guidelines for use by Paediatricians in developing countries. The aim of the project is to produce concise and reproducible systematic reviews of the guidance contained in the publication:

“WHO Pocket Book of Hospital Care for Children: Guidelines for the Management of Common Illnesses with Limited Resources”

The project includes systematic reviews on a number of important topics, incorporating diagnosis, therapeutics and surgical questions, outlining the evidence that exists on the subject and providing rapidly and easily accessible information for Paediatricians in resource constrainted settings. Successful reviews are being published regularly in the Journal of Tropical Paediatrics every two months, with others being integrated into the Pocketbook guidelines.

UWA has been actively involved in the ICHRC review since 2007, with the full support of the School of Paediatric & Child Health (SPACH). Furthermore, ICHRC has been integrated into the 4th year IMED 4501/4502 curriculum since 2008 and 8 groups (about 24 students) have been involved. Clinical years have also been short-listed to be published in the Journal of Tropical Paediatrics. One of the article reviewed last year is in the pipeline for the Journal of Tropical Paediatrics; others are waiting for the 2nd review.

In conclusion: If you want to get involved in Global Health and you are interested in Paediatrics, or you want something in your CV that says “involved in WHO”? or maybe just because you just have too much free time on your hands, JOIN ICHRC!!!
