Global Health Short Course
Sunday, 15 February 2009 17:07

The Global Health Short Course is an exciting new Interhealth-WAMSS (Western Australian Medical Students Society) initiative, designed to provide West Australian students and public with an avenue to learn and engage in issues of international health. It is designed to broaden the public consciousness and offer teaching in an area that is commonly sought but not well catered for. The eight week course will commence in week two of semester two (27th of July) of 2009, with the lectures being held each Monday at 5:30pm  in the UWA Tattersall Lecture Theatre (download map). To register your interest for the Global Health Short Course click here.

Every week, a guest lecturer will be invited to speak on a particular issue in International Health. In addition to this, handouts summarising key points, with additional resources will be given out. There will be stalls set up outside the lecture theatre from 5pm, with the lecture starting from 5:30pm and finishing between 7-7:30pm. Closer to the lecture dates, we will be uploading optional prereadings, links to relevant information and videos. We'll also be uploading a recording of the lecture for those who weren't able to make it. It is not compulsory to attend all 8 weeks of lectures, however the course is most informative if attended on a regular basis.

The course will be run as follows:

  • Week 1 (27/7): “The way things are” (statistics and global health)
  • Week 2 (3/8): “Making poverty history” (the causes and cures of global inequality)
  • Week 3 (10/8): “Getting shot is bad for your health + No place to call home” (Conflict and health + The health of displaced persons)
  • Week 4 (17/8): “Access to essential medicines” (Patent law and how this affects patients)
  • Week 5 (24/8): “It’s getting hot in here + When disaster strikes” (Climate change and health + Emergency humanitarian relief)
  • Week 6 (31/8): “Closing the gap” (Aboriginal health)
  • Week 7 (14/9): “Mums and Bubs” (Women’s and children’s health)
  • Week 8 (21/9): “AIDS” (The AIDS epidemic)
