Dr Carmen Lawrence

Dr Carmen Lawrence was elected as Australia’s first female premier in 1990. During her time as premier she held additional portfolios including Treasurer, Minister for Public Sector Management, Women's Interests, Family, Aboriginal Affairs and Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs. In 1994, Dr Lawrence was elected as a federal MP and held the seat of Fremantle until her retirement from politics in 2007. During that time she has acted as the Minster for Health and Human Services and was a member of various parliamentary committees including the Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs from 2002 and the Joint Standing Committee on Migration from 2004.  Over the years she has been an advocate of democratic reform and a strong voice on refugee policy.

Carmen is currently a Professional Fellow with the School of Psychology at the University of Western Australia where she is working to establish a centre to research the forces driving significant social change in key areas of contemporary challenge as well as exploring our reactions to that change. The centre will also seek to expose for public discussion the processes most likely to achieve social change where that is a desired objective.
