LINCS
Sunday, 15 February 2009 17:01

The Local & International Needs Contributions Scheme (LINCS) aims to match the surplus of unused medical supplies from WA with the needs of health care institutions in communities with limited resources around the globe. Medical students going on their electives to developing countries serve as the perfect transport option, as delivering these supplies not only helps the recipients, but helps to build goodwill between our students and their hosts.

LINCS aims to provide students with targeted medical aid for their elective placements by fulfilling wish-lists sent by the elective host. By coordinating requests for donations (both material and financial) and providing support liaising with airlines and customs, LINCS aims to make the process of bringing medical aid smoother and more successful for students.

LINCS was created in 2005 out of a growing need for coordination amongst students seeking supplies to bring on overseas electives to developing countries. At this stage the job had previously been done by the International Officer on the WAMSS committee. With the creation of Interhealth in 2007 LINCS grew to a subcommittee structure with positions for the LINCS coordinator, the Interhealth chair and sponsorship, publicity, inventory and logistics officers. LINCS was kindly given storage space from the School of Population Health for incoming donations.

The Growth of LINCS

Back in 2006 only 5 students brought equipment from LINCS on their electives. The following year with the expansion of LINCS this more than doubled, and has been increasing every year. Major donations from St John Ambulance and other donors in 2009 created a stockpile of supplies greater than 5th year students could take on electives. In 2010 LINCS is encouraging any university group or otherwise to consider taking medical supplies from LINCS. All they need to do is get a wish-list from the hospital or clinic they are travelling to.

Who can ask LINCS for supplies?

Anyone can. LINCS was originally designed for 5th year students going on electives, but is happy to help anyone in need of medical supplies going to a developing country. This includes pre-clinical students and members of the public.

Sponsoring LINCS

LINCS is seeking new sponsors for 2010/2011. LINCS can provide advertising in its annual calendar as well as at any of its events throughout the year. Contact the LINCS coordinator or sponsorship officer for more information.

Donating to LINCS

LINCS is associated with the Hackett Foundation of UWA, and so all donations are tax-deductible. We welcome both financial and material donations. If you would like any more information please contact the LINCS coordinator or logistics officer.

CALENDAR 2010

It’s that time of year, LINCS is putting together its annual calendar and wants your elective photos. This may be your one chance at photographic fame, so do it, send us your photos!
