Since 1999 Phil has worked in Afghanistan, under four successive Governments, in Kabul, Mazar and many places in between. He has lead rural development programs, focussed on education, mother and child health, water, sanitation and agriculture and worked with the UN managing, security, counter-narcotics, parliamentary and civil service reform and human rights monitoring. Most recently he was the Country Representative for Hagar Afghanistan, an agency working with victims of trafficking and sexual abuse.

 

Earlier, Phil worked in Iraqi refugee camps in Jordan, and with drug addicts in Delhi, with Kosovar refugee communities in Australia and in disaster management in Pakistan with international aid agencies CARE International, Oxfam and TEAR Australia.

 

He has taught international development and human rights at Curtin University and UWA. Phil was a co-founder of CASE for Refugees in WA, a specialist immigration service for refugees and asylum seekers.

 

Phil holds Bachelors degrees in Social Work and Psychology, and a Masters in International Development. His first book, ‘From Under a Leaky Roof: Afghan refugees in Australia', was published in December 2005 to critical acclaim. His second book won't be out anytime soon

 

Phil is married, with two daughters, and a son.
